Port of Vágur welcomes its largest cruise ship to date – MS Deutschland.

The cruise season in Vágur is still in progress – Vágur has welcomed 7 cruise ships to date and the largest of all was Phoenix Reisen’s MS Deutschland. MS Deutschland came on July 30, breaking the record as the largest cruise ship to call Port of Vágur.

Port of Vágur’s cruise season welcomes 9 cruise ships, 7 have already visited. The number of calls includes familiar ships, that have visited before, and 5 making their maiden call to Vágur. The total number of ships and passengers will surpass previous years. The steady growth is a result of continues work to establish cruise tourism in Vágur. This work is coordinated by Port of Vágur and Vágur Municipality, herein the tourism information center. Under the title Authentic and for you the aim is to develop a cruise destination that offers cruise passengers the opportunity to visit a modern rural Faroese town that beholds friendly locals, local businesses (such as two breweries and a wool design studio), museum, church, art, scenic landscapes and must-see viewpoints – all within walking distance from the ships. The island of Suðuroy, where Vágur is located, has so much to offer passengers and everything is within driving range.

The contribution these cruises ships have is huge, both in measurable and unmeasurable parameters. The growing number of ships visiting and their passengers and the positive economic revenue that comes with these ships contribute positively to the local value chain. This contribution enables locals to further invest and develop their businesses, giving locals and guests better experiences. But there are other parameters which are affected as well. The locals are pleased! They get to meet and welcome guests to their town – showing off what makes this town a special place – their home. Record broken and investments in infrastructure

Last year’s visit from Seabourn Venture made the books as the largest cruise ship to visit Vágur, but that record now belongs to MS Deutschland, tallying 175 m. Port of Vágur’ has two "cruise" berths with lengths of 120 m and 85 m and depths of 7 m and 9 m. The berths are fitted with bollards ranging from 30-100 T, and in connection with this season’s calls and future growth, we fitted the berth with a new 80 T bollard to accommodate the larger vessels. The development of the port's infrastructure continues in the coming year.
